Chemical Recycling Europe and key industry partners have issued a Call to Action urging the Danish EU Presidency and the European Commission to take immediate steps to protect Europe’s recycling industry and secure its leadership in the circular plastics transition.
Call to Action
Despite being essential for Europe’s sustainability and industrial resilience, the recycling sector is struggling due to unfair competition, regulatory delays, and a rapidly deteriorating market. The signatories call for timely implementation of key legislation—including the SUPD Implementing Act and PPWR secondary rules—and for stronger measures under the Industrial Accelerator Act, Circular Economy Act, and Eco-design Sustainable Product Regulation.
The document highlights three priorities:
-
Mandatory EU recycled content targets to ensure European waste is recycled within Europe.
-
Stronger protection against unfair competition and fraud in recycled content claims.
-
Dedicated funding mechanisms to accelerate sustainable investment across the plastics value chain.
The message is clear: Europe must act now to maintain industrial leadership, attract new investments, and keep circularity goals within reach.
